Love, Money, Power, and Family Collide in the Sequel to ‘The Inheritance Games’

Jennifer Lynn Barnes Takes a Very Risky Gamble with The Hawthorne Legacy.

From the moment I closed The Inheritance Games, I knew I was hooked. A book about an unlucky and unfortunate nobody entering a broken, rich family, became a world of which I was not yet ready to part with. Avery Grambs had won not only the Hawthorne family’s entire inheritance but also my heart and just as much as she needed to know why Tobias Hawthorne chose her, I did too. I needed to know why Avery, which Hawthorne brother she’d pick, and what the hell was up with Harry.

The Hawthorne Legacy picks up directly where The Inheritance Games leaves off. It’s fast paced, fun, and even more thrilling than its predecessor. With the ending of The Inheritance Games came more questions but also a desire to be done with Tobias Hawthornes games. The sequel is packed with indecisive acceptance, as Avery has to accept her newfound fame and fortune whilst also being unsure as to why she has it. Indecisive acceptance is a common theme not only for Avery Grambs but for the Hawthorne brother’s as well. Jameson and Grayson battle their feelings for Avery, while Grayson is also accepting her being a part of the family. Jameson works on accepting that this quest’s only purpose wasn’t to reunite him and his brothers; while Xander struggles to be included in the game despite holding its missing piece. Simultaneously, the four brother’s (yes, even Nash holds value in this puzzle) work extremely well and horrible together; like an old car that still runs but only if you turn it off and on four times. This aspect of the book makes it anxiously exciting because you never truly understand how each character is thinking until they act on it. We also get a lot more of Avery’s best friend Max, (thank god, the phone calls were not enough for me) whose character is refreshing, funny, and spontaneous. We continue to learn about each character and their backstories while new players are being put onto the board.
